A message to those who are stepping into college

Posted on July 26, 2015 by Namrata Kumari
I remember the day I had first stepped into my college. I felt so nervous and anxious in the new place, among strange people, leaving home for the first time. The memories are still so fresh. It seems, the time has paced too quickly and today my brother has started attending college. It’s so special to see your younger siblings growing up and going through phases that you had to go through as a part of growing up. Although, my college was a small and a less popular one and my brother will go to an institution so esteemed as IIT Kharagpur, I believe that there are a few universal things about the college life and people in the world that follows irrespective of anything. I am writing this to share whatever I have learnt in my college life and life (Yes, they are different) so far. I wish someone had told me these things before. So, here you go my young friends…

1. Accept changes, take them positively:
Although, I haven’t learnt this very well till today but accepting change is a must thing if you wish to be successful in life. For people are so superbly emotional and nostalgic as me, there’s a fact. When you look back in your life you feel nostalgic about the time you spent with people who came across your life and became a part of it. Soon the present would turn into the past and you would feel the same about it. So, whatever seems strange today won’t remain the same forever. Rather, it would occupy a special place in your life in a long run. So, cherish today and live it as if there’s no tomorrow.

2. Keep your dream clear in your mind:

College would come to an end. Always keep this in mind. There would be a tough life after this. So, keep your goals clear. Work for it from today. Your CGPA doesn’t speak much about you but your skills do. Go after knowledge and success would follow anyway. (Someone great had said this. Wink Wink!)

3. Friendship is the best lesson one learns in college:

Someone had told me that there’s no friend as the one we find in college. I won’t deny the fact. In fact, I would say that there would be a pretty less number of true friends that you would find after college. Friends in college means friends for a lifetime (mostly).

4. Don’t take haters very seriously:

C’mon, it’s just a matter a few years and believe me, these years would pass in a wink of your eyes. We tend to take people whom we hate or those who hate us, very seriously. And by doing so we spoil the best period of our life. Try focusing on positive things. Talk only about positive things. Think good. And try not to hate anyone as you won’t be able to meet your college mates after your college ends no matter, how much you want.

5. Love and relations may turn very nasty:

According to the Bollywood movies, college life is the ideal time to fall in love. It may be, but trust me, if not taken seriously love and relation turn into disasters in one’s life. According to what I have understood, decisions about love and relations must not be taken in haste. They can leave deep scars in your mind if not handled carefully. If you are doubtful then I would suggest to wait.

6. No one is good. No one is evil:

Good and bad are the sides of the same coin. Every one among us have something good and something bad in us. You are no one to give your verdict about how and what another person is and we must not forget that we too have lots of flaws in us. So, try to live happily with everyone around, overlooking their flaws.

7. A good company can change your life:

I was fortunate enough to meet some extraordinarily talented and helpful people in my college who inspired me to do better. Had I not met them, my life would have been playing on a scale lower. A good company can cause miracles to happen in your life. Always seek for people who can teach you in a way or the other. Try spending more time with them and staying away from those who love to gossip and talk non sense.

8. Health is wealth:

I suffered from jaundice just after the first two months of college had passed. It was definitely painful and one the most difficult times of my life. And since then I have always looked so weak and thin till today. Food should be taken very seriously. A hygienic food should be chosen over the tastier one.

9. Β Social media is a power, if used carefully:

More than eighty percent people I know don’t know how to utilize the power of social media. They have never used it for anything else other than stalking, chatting, changing display pictures, uploading photographs, tag bombing and updating shitty updates. Social media can be used for personal branding (I can talk about in some other post in detail) and creating influence among others. Use it wisely like a professional and you will see how it changes your life.

10. Life is all about being happy and positive:

It’s good to work very hard and push oneself to achieve the best. However, pushing oneself too much for a better future is not at all good if it stops allowing one to stay happy in the present. Stressing too much thinking about the future can never be a logical choice when no one can ever be sure about whether you will live tomorrow or not.

Lovely points Namrata. Totally agree with each and everyone of them :). I must say college life played a huge role in turning me from a protected child into an independent individual.
