The novel Brida by Paulo Coelho has explanations for some of the deepest and difficult questions. It’s a story of a young and charming girl named Brida and her explorations in the world of magic. It explains the theory of Soul mates in the most satisfying and interesting way.
Brida went to Wicca. She was eager to explore the road of magic, the bridge between the visible and the invisible. By now the Magus of Folk had already taught her about the ‘Dark night of faith’ which was the first lesson of the Tradition of sun. But Brida wanted to learn the other way, by the Tradition of moon. So, she went to Wicca. Wicca wanted to find out why the Magus chose to teach this girl. Of course, she had a gift but the Magus must have had a special interest. So, Wicca told Brida about the Soul mates.
Brida was young, eager and restless, her mind full of questions which was to be quenched by the answers of Wicca. She told her all about Soul mates. Soul mate is the first thing to be learnt about in the tradition of moon. Learning about the Soul mates makes us understand how the knowledge is transmitted over time. She further appeased Brida’s anxiety by saying –
“We are eternal because we are all manifestations of God. That is why we go through many lives and many deaths, emerging out of some unknown place and going toward another equally unknown place. You must get used to the fact that there are many things in magic which are not and never will be explained. God decided to do certain things in a certain way and why He did this is a secret known only to Him.”
Wicca tried to explain the fact that reincarnation happens. But along with it she answered the most difficult questions that are coupled with the fact that if in the beginning there were few people on Earth how did the number grow? Did the souls multiply? Where did the new souls come from?
She explained that just as crystals and stars do, in some reincarnations the soul divides into two forming a male and a female part. “That’s how the Book of Genesis explains it: the soul of Adam was split in two, and Eve was born out of him.” So, gradually in generations we are spread all over the planet. Further, Wicca defined love in a brilliant way. She spoke about Anima mundi, the Soul of the World. If Anima mundi simply continue to divide it would become weaker finally. So, along with the process of partition there is a process of finding. And the process of finding ourselves is called Love.
Thus, for our entire lives we suffer through a mysterious obligation to find at least one of our Soul mates. “The Greater Love that separated them feels pleased with the Love that brings them together again.” Brida furthered her investigation by asking what if we find more that one Soul mate in a lifetime. To this Wicca replied that it happens with certain bitterness. As the heart divides it brings pain and suffering. She also said that if our Soul mates are happy so will we be and if not we would suffer a part of their pain and sufferings.
Although we are totally responsible for the reunion, at least once in an incarnation our paths are bound to be crossed by one of our Soul mates. And just this little moment brings us with love so intense that it justifies one’s entire life.
